Learning to Simplify

The Truth About Simplifying Home Management

I don’t know about you but I can get lost for hours going down the rabbit hole of looking up tasty and easy recipes on Pinterest. Unfortunately, when you get stuck in that loop of looping up recipes, you don’t actually get any closer to making the meal. Personally, by the time I’m done looking up that perfect recipe and print it out, I have little energy to cook the meal.

Common sense?

I have shied away from sharing my meal prep and home management tips for a while and yesterday I had an aha! moment. I felt like it was too easy, surely everyone must know this and is rolling their eyes at these tips. But the truth is just because it comes easily to me, doesn’t mean it’s widely practiced by everyone. There’s a saying that common sense isn’t so common. Well, without insulting anyone, it’s true when it comes to home management.

When it comes to keeping your home running smoothly there are just a few strategies that you need to learn and then, now this is the hard part, JUST DO IT. In doing the tasks you’ll find out what you like and what you don’t like. You’ll figure out easier ways to get something done. Alternatively, you just might find that you never, ever want to make a certain recipe again (raising my hand here and dramatically throwing out a recipe I printed out).

Now, what does home management mean to me? I see it as two major parts:

1. Making food that everyone enjoys and that is at least somewhat healthy

From just a few simple ingredients you could cook up a ton of different recipes (keep an eye out for more coming up in the meal prep section soon!). Basically the way I see it is that if you cook the food yourself at home, it will be healthier than any meal you eat out or take out. Unless you’re super fancy and get those superfood meals lol, in this case, the take out may be healthier, but still more expensive.

By creating simple meal prep routines (and actually doing them!) I’ve been able to cut down on the time it takes to prepare a delicious meal. I mean when you could make chili bowls in 10 minutes, everyone is happy.

2. The second major part of home management is the organization and cleanliness of the home

I don’t know about you, but when I come home after a long day of work or even just running personal errands, the last thing I want to do is wash that huge pile of dishes or vacuum the floors. This is why a major part of simplifying home management has been to create systems.

I know that the dishes will be done at a certain time each day so I don’t need to worry or feel guilty about not doing them right away. I know that bathrooms will be cleaned on a certain day plus I know how to clean them and with what, so again I don’t worry about it until then. When it comes time to do that chore, there is enough time to get it done so I am not rushing through it. I am also not spending mental energy trying to figure out how to approach each task. It comes as naturally as walking. I have faith that you can to this point too.

This kind of peace about home management, both the cleaning and organizing aspects, comes with a little bit more effort at the front end, but once you’ve learned and figured things out you’ll reap the benefits for years to come.

How to overcome cleaning overwhelm

Let’s get started!

So, I invite you on this journey of becoming a master of homemaking. This is not just for those who stay at home with the kids. This is for those who go out to work, those who have moved out for the first time, and those who are just tired of living in a constant state of catching up and never really feeling like they got it under control. Men and women are welcome to join me on this mission but I do have a special place in my heart for women. I find it’s women who tend to take on too much and then get overwhelmed.

The chaos and overwhelm stops here. Let’s learn how to do this, simplify our strategy to just a few key ones, and live life with more ease.
